Tree spade vs. balled & burlapped

The Spade Advantage

A mechanical tree spade moves a bigger tree, with a bigger ball and more of the original roots, than a retail nursery B&B or container tree.

When we B&B

For DIY pickup and for shipping, the tree is freshly dug with an oversized root ball — a 44-, 65-, or 90-inch spade ball, not a 24- to 30-inch nursery basket. That extra soil and root is what gives the tree its best chance.

We never pre-dig. We never set a tree in a holding lot. It comes out of the field when it is going to you.

When the tree has to ship

Plant it with the spade.
